Bernard J. Gallagher III is Professor of Psychiatric Sociology at Villanova University.  He holds an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he also received his Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Psychology.

Dr. Gallagher's specialty is Psychiatric Sociology, a field in which he has conducted extensive research on such topics as the causes of schizophrenia, sexual disorders, and the relationship between criminal behavior and mental illness.  He is the author of some sixty articles, papers and books including The Sociology of Mental Illness, the leading book in the field.  He received Villanova University's Outstanding Faculty Research Award in 1993, and is a perennial finalist for the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.

When he is not writing at his desk at home, he takes it with him to the South Jersey shore where he spends a lot of time ocean fishing.  He releases all of the fish that are not headed for the dinner table.  For seven years, he was the leader and drummer of the Philadelphia-based rock band, ORION.  Dr. Gallagher claims that it was an opportunity for "field research."  His son, Bernard J. Gallagher IV, is a wonderful person who is widely loved and respected.
